My husband and I have an agreement: if he picks up some random protein at the store, I’ll cook it, even if it’s something I’ve never made before. I like a good cooking adventure and I LOVE meat. So a couple days ago, he picked up a rack of ribs!
I love ribs, but I’ve never made them before. I decided to oven bake them because, well, I live in an apartment where I’m not allowed to have an actual grill out on the porch, so I don’t really have a better option currently.
The first challenge was removing the thin membrane from the bottom of the rack of ribs. The recipes I read described it as basically dislodging the membrane with a knife and peeling it off. This was NOT the case! That membrane was a bitch to get off, and it came off in pieces, but I won in the end. Then I simply seasoned the rack on both sides with salt and pepper, placed it on a foil-lined baking sheet, and baked it at 350 degrees for about an hour and 45 minutes.
I added the BBQ sauce (Sweet Baby Ray’s Sweet And Spicy) and put them back in for 15 min, then let them rest for a few minutes before serving.
The official review: these ribs are great! They’re a little crispy on the outside, glazed with delicious BBQ flavor, and so very tender and juicy on the inside. It was a terrific eating experience: first, the slight crisp combined with the sweet/spicy glaze of the sauce, then the juicy explosion of the meat inside as it fell off the bone in a glorious release. I’ve eaten a lot of ribs in my life, but if I was served these ribs at a restaurant, I’d definitely be a repeat customer. Good thing the restaurant is my kitchen!
Needless to say, the hubby was very pleased with the outcome as well. I love our arrangement: I can cook a lot of food and he’ll help eat it all! I love cooking, but I can’t eat very much, so I ended up throwing out a lot of leftovers when I was single. Now I can play in my kitchen much more often!
I would definitely recommend making ribs at home. It’s much cheaper than going to the BBQ joint and you don’t have to drive or change out of your pajamas. Win win!
