I’m on the second of my three free dinners from Hello Fresh. I planned to make this last night but I was tired and didn’t feel like cooking, so I just didn’t. I’m lucky enough to have a husband who isn’t completely helpless and can figure out how to procure some food for himself without requiring my help, thank goodness. If that wasn’t the case, I’d still be single because there’s just no excuse for that shit.
Tonight’s dinner was sweet-as-honey chicken with green beans over jasmine rice, and I was far more impressed with it than I thought I’d be. I don’t do rice a lot and almost substituted baked potatoes, but I’m glad I didn’t because there’s a reason this recipe calls for rice. The flavor profile reminds me of the sesame chicken I get from Chinese restaurants (which is typically served over rice), but it’s much lighter and healthier. The sauce is basically aromatics (garlic and ginger) cooked in olive oil with soy sauce, reduced stock, and honey. If you’ve ever cooked rice, this recipe is no different, and green beans are easily cooked in the microwave, so this recipe requires almost no talent or effort in the kitchen.
Overall, the hubby and I were both impressed with this recipe and it was very easy to make. I’ve made two of my three free dinners now and both were delicious! I don’t know if I’d pay full price for these kits just yet but I can definitely see their value for people who are richer than us. I have one more meal kit to go, and then I’ll develop my final review of Hello Fresh.
As I was writing this post, my husband said he was still hungry and heated up a can of chili, so I may have to amend my review in terms of this recipe’s ability to satisfy the hunger of two adults, especially when he’s one of them. I guess we’ll see how the third and final meal kit goes. My final review will be decided heavily based on whether we have to immediately order a pizza after dinner thanks to his bottomless stomach.
