Culinary Experiments: Oven-Baked Chicken Wings

I love cooking and I love chicken wings, but (amazingly) I’ve never made them at home before. My husband and I are trying to save as much money as possible towards our house fund, so we’re not spending money to eat out. I’ve also taken on a part-time evening gig delivering food orders to make extra money, and one of the main local restaurants I’ve been delivering from is Wingstop. Man do those wings smell good!

So tonight I decided to try my hand at homemade wings and I’m oven-baking them so they’ll be healthier. So far it’s been interesting. I didn’t realize when I bought the wings that they were whole, not cut into the flats and drumsticks I’m familiar with. I’m not a professional butcher, so I did my best to split them up into the kind of wings I’m used to seeing. Then I dried them with a paper towel, coated them with a bit of canola oil, and seasoned them with salt and pepper. AH! PUSH IT! PUSH IT GOOD! AH! PUSH IT! PUSH IT REAL GOOD! What? No, I said salt and pepper, not “Salt-N-Pepa.” πŸ˜‚ I spread them out on a foil-lined baking sheet and put them in a 425 degree preheated oven, and I’m now about 7 minutes away from seeing how well this experiment is going.

Approximately 30 minutes later: the verdict is in! These wings were amazing!! And so easy to make! I sauced half of mine with sweet mango habanero sauce and the other half with Sweet Baby Ray’s Sweet & Spicy BBQ sauce. My husband likes traditional buffalo sauce, so I made his with buffalo.

This was a great experiment! Fun in the kitchen for me, delicious wings for hubby and myself, much cheaper than ordering out, and much healthier than the deep-fried ones from restaurants (for our waistlines). I think we have a new household staple.
